IF WE COULD SEE INSIDE OTHERS' HEARTS; DON'T JUDGE WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING

A profound look at life, in 4 minutes. You have to watch this -- and share it. We literally welled up with tears -- very rarely does that happen.

The camera wanders and shows the inner lives of people around us as they do their daily tasks. Most of it is set in a hospital, where there is so much worry, sadness, some joy, bad news, good news, no news, anxiety, fear -- as in real life, but perhaps magnified.

We've all BEEN there - experienced at least one of these people's lives. Hence, the tears! It's so TRUE.

This short video is at once quiet, profound, powerful, true, simple -- and so supremely human. It was produced by the Cleveland Clinic, as an example of their regard for empathy.

It's a profound reminder: we ALL have our story. Others have theirs. We NEVER know. And to treat others with the benefit of the doubt, with courtesy, with compassion, with respect.

News Curator: Another doctor working to control ebola dies in Sierra Leone

A doctor who led the fight against ebola in Sierra Leone died Wednesday from the virus, several weeks after another infected specialist with a key role in the effort to stop the spread of the disease in the African nation also died.

The death on Wednesday of Dr. Modupeh Cole was announced by the Health Ministry, according to press reports in Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone.

Trained in the United States, Cole was one of the physicians in charge of the Connaught public hospital located in Freetown and where ebola patients are being treated.

Cole's death is a heavy blow to efforts to contain the ebola epidemic in the country, which has a serious lack of professional health care personnel and infrastructure and has already been adversely affected by the death in July of Dr. Sheik Humarr Khan, who headed the program against the disease.

Since the ebola outbreak in March in Guinea Conakry and its spread later to Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria, more than 1,000 people have died from the disease, according to World Health Organization figures.

News Curator: Stanford professor is first woman to win the 'Nobel' for math

A Stanford mathematician has won the coveted 2014 Fields Medal for her original work understanding the mathematical symmetry of curved surfaces and saddle-shaped spaces.

Maryam Mirzakhani is the first woman ever to win what scientists around the world call the "Nobel Prize for mathematics." She is the second person from Stanford to win the award.

Mirzakhani, who was born in Iran, has been professor of mathematics at Stanford since 2008. She received her award Wednesday at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Seoul.

"I will be happy if it encourages young female scientists and mathematicians," she said in a statement released by Stanford. "This is a great honor, I am sure there will be many more women winning this kind of award in coming years."

The Fields medal pays tribute to Mirzakhani's original work in understanding the math involved in dynamical systems such as water flowing through pipes or pendulums swinging in space. Math is also involved in the shapes of doughnuts and saddles, and the curves of a spacecraft voyaging to the planets - all examples of the complex mathematics that Mirzhakani's work has helped make clear.

News Curator: Arizona State lineman Chip Sarafin comes out as gay

Arizona State senior offensive lineman Edward "Chip" Sarafin has come out as gay, the school's athletic department confirmed after it was reported on Wednesday through a local magazine for gay sports.

He became the first active college football player to come out to the public, and followed in the footsteps of St. Louis Rams linebacker Michael Sam, who came out publicly following the conclusion of his collegiate career at Missouri.

Sarafin, who denied an interview request with USA TODAY Sports, told the Phoenix-based magazine for gay sports, Compete, of his sexual orientation in a nonchalant manner and said he told his teammates last spring.

"It was really personal for me, and it benefited my peace of mind greatly," he said in the magazine.

"We are a brotherhood that is not defined by cultural and personal differences, but rather an individual's commitment to the Sun Devil Way," ASU coach Todd Graham said in a statement. "Chip is a fifth-year senior and a Scholar Baller, a graduate and a master's student. His commitment to service is unmatched and it is clear he is on his way to leading a successful life after his playing career, a goal that I have for every student-athlete. Diversity and acceptance are two of the pillars of our program, and he has full support from his teammates and the coaching staff."

News Curator: ‘Let’s Be Cops’ rates a stretch in witless protection

The only truly lethal weapons in the criminally unfunny action comedy “Let’s Be Cops’’ are the lame script, putrid direction and pair of sitcom stars mugging nonstop in frantic pursuit of laughs that have fled over the state line.

“New Girl” costars Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. play a couple of 30-year-old nitwits who discover strangers respond to their LA cop masquerade costumes, so they decide to play cops for fun.

Johnson’s character is an unemployed actor and former football star for Purdue University — which ought to sue for defamation — while Wayans plays a video game designer.

Somehow their highly inexpert ruse fools even a veteran police officer (Rob Riggle), who becomes their ally.

News Curator: Samsung pins its hopes on Galaxy Alpha's metal frame

Samsung has launched its new Galaxy Alpha with a metal frame, in a bid to boost sales after the plastic design of its smartphones has been blamed for the company’s recent struggles.

The Wednesday launch of the latest Galaxy smartphone comes after a difficult second quarter for Samsung. While overall smartphones sales grew by almost 27 percent, Samsung’s shipments dropped. In May, the company also appointed a new head of its design team.

Samsung has pitched the Galaxy Alpha with its metal frame as a new start, and the design as something “entirely new” compared to the design of its existing products, which have been justifiably criticized for looking cheap irrespective of what they cost.

However, in reality the shape of the home button still makes it look very much like a Samsung smartphone, and the plastic back has inherited the dimpled design of the Galaxy S5. For some, the changes Samsung has made aren’t nearly big enough.

“Overall it’s a good phone but I was disappointed with the design, even with the metal frame it feels too plastic,” said Francisco Jeronimo, research director for European mobile devices at IDC.

News Curator: U.S. stocks gain on biotech rally, shrug off data; Dow rises 0.55%

A rally in the biotech sector send broader U.S. stock indices rising on Wednesday despite a weaker-than-expected report on retail sales.

At the close of U.S. trading, the Dow 30 rose 0.55%, the S&P 500 index rose 0.67%, while the NASDAQ Composite index rose 1.02%.

The Volatility S&P 500 index, which measures the outlook for market volatility, was down 9.13% at 12.84.
Biotech and airline stocks rallied on Wednesday, which brought broader stock indices up with them, especially on sentiments that geopolitical fears haven't panned out.

While nerves remain on edge over conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza and Iraq, military operations have calmed in recent sessions, which gave bottom fishers reason to snap up nicely-priced stocks.

News Curator: Russian convoy vanishes on road to Ukraine

Ukraine accused Moscow of mounting a cynical attempt to incite a pro-Russian rebellion on Wednesday, as uncertainty surrounded a 262-truck "aid convoy" that appeared to grind to a halt before reaching the border.
The stand-off came as violence worsened in eastern Ukraine, with the United Nations announcing that the death toll in the four-month conflict had doubled in the past two weeks to more than 2,000.
Government forces are seeking to press their advantage against the pro-Russian rebels, which has stoked fears that the aid convoy is part of a Russian plan to fend off the rebels' seemingly inevitable defeat.
"The level of Russian cynicism knows no bounds," said Arseniy Yatsenyuk, the Ukrainian prime minister. "First they send tanks, Grad missiles and bandits who fire on Ukrainians – and then they send water and salt."
Arsen Avakov, Ukraine's interior minister, had said the "Putinist" convoy would not pass, calling it a "provocation by a cynical aggressor".

News Curator: Israel targets 'terror sites'; Hamas OKs cease-fire

After a three-day cease-fire ended Wednesday, the Israeli military said it was targeting "terror sites" across Gaza after five rockets were launched into Israel. The move came as Egyptian and Palestinian officials announced all sides had agreed to extend the truce five days for more negotiations
.
It was not clear if the fighting was isolated or might shatter the truce. Israel had no immediate comment on the extension.

Egypt's foreign ministry and the head of the Palestinian negotiating team, Azzam al-Ahmad, announced the agreement for the five-day extension. Al-Ahmad said it was to ensure a "positive atmosphere," noting there had been "lots of progress" in the indirect talks taking place in Cairo.

Israeli police spokeswoman Luba Samri said at least one rocket that was fired two hours before the cease-fire was set to expire exploded in open land in southern Israel and caused no damage or injuries,
Hamas denied responsibility for that attack.

"I can't believe it. Really," said Adele Raemer on the Facebook page she moderates for Israelis who live close to the Gaza border.

News Curator: 2014 NBA schedule: The 10 biggest games

The NBA schedule has been released, so let's look at the biggest games. You know, the games that you could see being introduced with a completely over-the-top video. The revenge games, the ones with all the narratives, the ones you mark on your calendar. There's a lot of Cleveland here, obviously.

Cleveland @ Chicago, Oct. 31, 8 p.m. ET, ESPN
The NBA gave us a nice treat this Halloween: a potential Eastern Conference Finals preview. Most observers think these are the top two teams in the East, and at the beginning of the season they'll still be trying to implement all the new pieces. Fun fact: Derrick Rose played against LeBron James' Heat on opening night last year, and he scored just 12 points on 4-for-15 shooting. Rose is focused on having a stronger start this time.

San Antonio @ Cleveland, Nov. 19, 7 p.m. ET, ESPN
Three weeks in, just how good will these Cavs be? Will the Spurs have picked up where they left off last season? Everyone will want to see LeBron and company take on the champs, and it'll be a good challenge for David Blatt's team to see how they stack up. It'll also be great when Gregg Popovich and Tim Duncan talk about how this is just another game on the schedule. If you were wondering, this isn't a part of a back-to-back, so Pop shouldn't be resting anybody.

News Curator: Guide to Developments in Missouri Police Shooting

After an unarmed black teenager was shot by a Ferguson, Missouri, police officer, authorities have resisted calls to release the name of the officer while imploring protesters to keep their demonstrations calm and avoid new trouble in the city north of downtown St. Louis. Here's a look at the key elements of the shooting and the unrest that followed:

THE SHOOTING: Police have said the shooting happened after a scuffle between the officer and two men he encountered on the street. Police say one of the man pushed the officer into his squad car, then struggled with him in the vehicle, where the officer's gun went off. The struggle then spilled onto the street, where 18-year-old Michael Brown was shot multiple times. Police have not said whether Brown was the person who struggled with the officer in the car. Dorian Johnson, who says he was with Brown when the shooting happened, has told media outlets that the officer ordered them out of the street, then tried to open his door so close to the men that it "ricocheted" back, apparently upsetting the officer. Johnson says the officer grabbed his friend's neck, then tried to pull him into the car before brandishing his weapon and firing. He says Brown started to run and the officer pursued him, firing multiple times. Johnson and another witness both say Brown was on the street with his hands raised when the officer fired at him repeatedly.

News Curator: He was always Mork to me

When every day’s news is filled with reports of murders or war atrocities, I never understand why I should be uniquely saddened when a famous person passes away. It sounds heartless, but I find that their absence doesn’t affect my life in any significant way. That’s why I’m usually left confused by the rituals of communal grief that consume television and social media in the wake of a celebrity’s passing.

But then Robin Williams took his own life, and I felt it far more deeply than I had any right to.

I wasn’t alone. Tributes began pouring in almost immediately from all over, and everyone was recalling their favorite Robin Williams moments. Was “Good morning, Vietnam!” the first quote that came to mind, or was it “O Captain, my Captain"? Will you remember him as Aladdin’s Genie or Mrs. Doubtfire? And did you find yourself putting your hand into a sideways Vulcan salute and saying “Nanu nanu”?

See, that’s what I did. Because Robin Williams was many things to many people, but he will always be Mork to me.

News Curator: Russia sending aid convoy to Ukraine despite Western warnings of 'invasion pretext'

President Vladimir Putin said on Monday Russia is sending an aid convoy to eastern Ukraine despite urgent Western warnings against using humanitarian help as a pretext for an invasion.

With Ukraine reporting Russia has massed 45,000 troops on its border, NATO said there was a "high probability" that Moscow could intervene militarily in the country's east, where Kiev's forces are closing in on pro-Russian separatists.

Western countries believe that Putin - who has whipped up the passions of Russians with a nationalist campaign in state-controlled media since annexing Crimea from Ukraine in March - could now send his forces into the east to head off a humiliating rebel defeat.

U.S. oil prices edged higher and gold futures finished flat as traders kept an eye on developments in Ukraine and the Middle East.

OPENING CALL

New Zealand government bond yields are pushing higher Tuesday as a "heavy week of issuance" likely put pressure on prices, says BNZ strategist Raiko Shareef. The Debt Management Office will offer NZ$200 million of nominal bonds Thursday, and the Local Government Funding Agency will also tender NZ$285 million of bonds Wednesday, including NZ$110 million of a new 2020 bond. BNZ expects solid demand for the new LGFA bond.

News Curator: School system CIOs are sold on Chromebooks

David Andrade, the CIO of Bridgeport Public Schools in Connecticut, has deployed 11,000 Chromebooks over the past year and plans to add another 5,000 in the next 12 months. It's a major deployment, but not unusual.

Other school systems are doing much the same thing. The Cherry Creeks School District in Greenwood Village, Co. deployed 18,000 last year, and Boston recently announced a deployment of 10,000 Chromebooks.

These rollouts by school systems may be why the Chromebook is surviving, thriving even.

Gartner on Monday said that sales of Chromebooks will reach 5.2 million units worldwide this year, with more than 80% of the demand in the U.S. That's an 80% increase in sales from 2013.

News Curator: NATO chief says will have to decide on Afghan pullout soon

NATO will soon be forced to take a decision on a total pullout from Afghanistan unless a deadlock over the country's election ends and a new president signs an agreement allowing foreign forces to stay, the head of the alliance said on Monday.

Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen told Reuters the Sept. 4-5 NATO summit in Wales would be very close to a deadline for taking that decision.

News Curator: Cease-fire close as Israel relaxes positions

Israel has agreed to substantially ease conditions in the Gaza Strip during the Cairo cease-fire talks, a senior official in Jerusalem said yesterday.

Israel's new position means that the two sides - Israel and the Palestinians, representing Hamas and the other Gazan militant groups - are now close to an agreement on a permanent cease-fire.

72-hour temporary cease-fire went into effect at midnight on Sunday and was respected by both sides throughout Monday. With the cease-fire holding, the Israeli delegation to the talks retrurned to Cairo.

News Curator: U.S. air mission in Iraq still focused on refugee aid

President Obama announced Thursday that the United States would start air operations in Iraq. Subsequent comments from him and administration officials made the distinction between ground and combat troops.

Those ground forces would include special operators capable of getting closer to Islamic State positions and directing the airstrikes in cooperation with Iraqi ground troops, such as Kurdish peshmerga, said the officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity because officials were not authorized to speak publicly.

However, "there are no plans to expand the air campaign," said Lt. Gen. William Mayville, the director of operations for the Joint Chiefs of Staff. "We are gripped by the immediacy of the crisis, and our focus right now is to provide immediate relief to those who are suffering," he said.

Kevin Ward Jr., a New York sprint car driver who was killed Saturday night after an on-track incident with NASCAR driver Tony Stewart, died of "massive blunt trauma," authorities said Monday

Sheriff Philip C. Povero told reporters that the Ontario County medical examiner finished an autopsy on the 20-year-old driver on Monday.

Povero also said investigators were reviewing a second video of the incident in which Stewart's car struck Ward as the young driver stood on the dirt track after a spin out. Ward died of his injuries before an ambulance arrived at a hospital.

News Curator: UN proposal would punish Iraq and Syria militants

Britain has proposed a draft U.N. resolution aimed at punishing recruitment and financing of foreign fighters for the Islamic State militant group now controlling a swath of Syria and Iraq, and all other terrorist groups associated with al-Qaida.

The proposed resolution expresses the Security Council's readiness to impose sanctions on those recruiting, supporting and fighting for terrorist groups, and says a list of individuals will be added to the resolution before its adoption.

The draft deplores "in the strongest terms" the terrorist acts and "violent extremist ideology" of the Islamic State group and stresses that "widespread or systematic attacks directed against any civilian populations because of their ethnic background, religion or belief may constitute a crime against humanity."

News Curator: Police shooting of black teen in Missouri focus of federal inquiry

As tensions roiled a St. Louis suburb on Monday, the FBI and the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division have opened separate investigations into the fatal shooting of an unarmed black teenager that sparked a night of vandalism and looting, officials said.
U.S. Atty. Gen. Eric H. Holder Jr. said in a statement that he believes the shooting in Ferguson “deserves fulsome review”  and he wants the federal inquiry to “supplement, not supplant” the investigation by local police in Missouri.

News Curator: U.S. Welcomes Important Step in Iraq's Government Formation Process

The United States welcomes Iraqi President Fuad Masum’s charging of the nominee of the largest bloc in the Council of Representatives, Dr. Haider Al-Abadi, with the formation of a new government. This signifies the successful completion of the third step in Iraq’s constitutionally mandated government formation process, following the election of the Speaker of Parliament and the election of the President of the Republic in July.
The United States applauds President Masum’s fulfillment of his constitutional duties and urges the Prime Minister-designate to form a government that is representative of the Iraqi people and inclusive of Iraq’s religious and ethnic identities. The Prime-Minister designate should present the members of his proposed new government to the Council of Representatives consistent with Iraq’s constitutional timeline.
The United States will continue to support Iraq’s democratic process and stand with the Iraqi people in their fight against terrorism.
